Latest Adoption and Special Guardianship Leadership Board (ASGLB) data

The Quarter 4 ASGLB data for 2017/18 is now available

The ASGLB data return is completed by every local authority, voluntary adoption agency, and regional adoption agency in England on a quarterly basis. The latest publicly available data covers the period up to 31 March 2018.  This data covers all local authorities and VAAs in England.

The key headlines for Quarter 4 are:

  • The number of children waiting at the end of March 2018 was 2630. This is a decrease since December 2017 when there were  2,710 children waiting with a placement order not yet placed. However this is a 6% increase compared to the end of March 2017.
  • Over the four quarters of 2017/18 there were 3850 adoptions; a decrease of 12% compared to 2016/17 when there were 4370 adoptions
  • The number of placement orders fell in each quarter of 2017/18. There were 860 placement orders granted in quarter 4; a decrease of 13% from quarter 3 when there were 990 placement orders granted.
  • Child timeliness has improved.  The time taken between a child entering care and being placed with a family for children who were adopted during in 2017/18 was 14 months. This is a decrease on 2016/17 where the average was 15 months.
  • There is an increase in the number of registrations to become an adopter. In 2017/18 there were 3610 registrations, an increase of 4% on 2016/17 when there were 3460 registrations to become an adopter.
  • There are fewer families approved to adopt. There were 2880 families approved in 2017/18, a decrease of 4% from 2016/17 when there were 2980 families approved for adoption.

The ASGLB data return is completed by every local authority, voluntary adoption agency, and regional adoption agency in England on a quarterly basis. The latest publicly available data covers the period up to 31 December 2017. This data covers all local authorities and VAAs in England.

The key headlines for Quarter 3 are:

  • The number of children waiting at the end of December 2017 was 2650. This has remained the same as at September 2017 when there were also 2650 children waiting with a placement order not yet placed.
  • There were 870 placement orders granted in quarter 3; a decrease of 12% from quarter 2 when there were 990 placement orders granted.
  • There were 760 registrations to become an adopter in quarter 3; a decrease of 4% from quarter 2 when there were 790 registrations to become an adopter.
  • The number of families approved for adoption has increased from 680 in quarter 2 to 740 in quarter 3; an increase of 9%.

Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 ASGLB data for 2017/18 is now available

The ASGLB data return is completed by every local authority, voluntary adoption agency, and regional adoption agency in England on a quarterly basis. The latest publicly available data covers the period up to 30 September 2017. This data covers all local authorities and VAAs in England.

The key headlines for Quarter 1 are:

  • The number of children waiting at the end of June 2017 was 2460. This is a 0.4% decrease from March 2017 when there were 2470 children waiting with a placement order not yet placed.
  • There were 900 placement orders granted in quarter 1; a decrease of 16% from March 2017 when there were 1070.
  • There were 790 registrations to become an adopter in quarter 1; a decrease of 17% from March 2017 when there were 950 registrations in quarter 4.
  • The number of families approved for adoption has declined from 710 in quarter 4 2017/18 to 570 in quarter 1 2017/18; a decrease of 20%.

The key headlines for Quarter 2 are:

  • The number of children waiting at the end of September 2017 was 2550. This is a 4% decrease from June 2017 when there were 2650 children waiting with a placement order not yet placed.
  • There were 870 placement orders granted in quarter 2; a decrease of 17% from June 2017 when there were 1050.
  • Registrations to become an adopter have remained the same at 790 per quarter
  • The number of families approved for adoption has increased from 570 in quarter 1 2017/18 to 680 in quarter 2 2017/18; an increase of 19%.
